The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”

No formal cause of death has been revealed at this time.

Considered a pioneer of the electronic dance genre, the Swedish musician, DJ, remixer and record producer first burst onto the scene in 2011, when he released the popular house song, “Levels,” which launched him into superstardom.

The song became the number one song in Sweden, Hungary, and Norway, while also managing to garner the top spot on the U.S. Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

In 2012, Avicii was nominated for his second Grammy award, this time, for his collaboration with David Guetta on the song”Sunshine.” That year, he also became the first electronic artist to be the headliner at the Radio City Music Hall.

He released his first album, True, in 2013, which he followed up with Stories in 2015 and his 2017 EP, Avīci (01).

Avicii’s health has been a major question mark year, and the DJ famously retired from touring back in 2016, citing a variety of health issues including acute pancreatitis. He also had his gallbladder and pancreas removed back in 2014.

“To me it was something I had to do for my health,” Bergling told The Hollywood Reporter in 2016. “The scene was not for me. It was not the shows and not the music. It was always the other stuff surrounding it that never came naturally to me. All the other parts of being an artist. I’m more of an introverted person in general. It was always very hard for me. I took on board too much negative energy, I think.”

The musician attributed most of his prevalent ailments to excessive drinking and partying. However, Avicci revealed in a 2013 interview with Time magazine, that he had stopped consuming alcohol altogether.

“I was drinking way too much, partying in general way too much,” Bergling said. “So that forced me to do a 180 and stop drinking.”

In addition to his solo work, Avicci has collaborated with several big-name musicians, including Jon Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Madonna Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Chris Martin, Wyclef Jean, Matisyahu and most recently, Rita Ora.
