The genetics are some old stuff from the 1980's from my personal seed collection. Mostly sativa hybrids from the "Boys of Summer" in the canyons of Orange County - "back in the day" and crossed with some of the Afghani strains that were around from the BOEL in and around Laguna Beach.
RE: Leaf Surface
The Horsetail Ferns is a accumulator of several minerals and in particular Silica (Si) @ 97,000 ppm [cite]. The only plant material with a higher Silica content is Rice stalks @ 140,000 ppm [cite].
Yes there is Silica in the hulls and because of the composition of the hulls it is released very slowly - as in months. The Silica in Rice stalks (grass if you wish) is easily extracted by soaking the material in water for several weeks like you do most botanical teas.
Horsetail Ferns are all over the Pacific Northwest so for me it's the easiest to source since growing rice probably isn't in the cards for my situation - at least in this spin of the karmic wheel.
The following information was provided by "CC" , I found it posted it in the Social Stream of consciousness and thought I would add it here for longevity. Thanks CC.
"Horizon Herbs (http://www.horizonherbs.com/pilot.asp) in Southern Oregon is a Biodynamic Farm which grows and sells the widest range of medicinal plants that I've found.
One group of seeds that they sell is called 'Lifetime Medicinal Herb Garden (http://www.horizonherbs.com/product.asp?specific=904) includes the following: Astragalus, Holy Basil (Kapoor Tulsi), Gobo Burdock, Mixed Calendula, German Chamomile,... See Full Comment Echinacea purpurea, Elecampane, Evening Primrose, Brown Flax, Lemon Balm, Marshmallow, Official Motherwort, Stinging Nettles, Cayenne Pepper, Garden Sage, Official Valerian, Wood Betony and Yarrow. All of these plant seeds for $29.95
They also carry the sterile, non-invasive Comfrey - the Bocking 14 for $2.00 for each root start. Once it's established you can remove pieces of root (about 1 - 1.5") and start other plants. You cannot kill this plant - it's impossible so choose your site well - the roots go down as far as 15' which is why it accumulates the huge range of elements in the leaves - 3.8x the levels of Potassium vs. thermal compost or animal manure - in a soluble form."
My comfrey plant (still potted) wasn't watered for three weeks while I was out of town. I came back to a dead looking comfrey plant. I gave her some water and the next day there were new leaves. Can't kill this thing!
