Marijuana: Fact or Fiction

Fact or Fiction:  Marijuana and What WE think!

Marijuana has been around since the dawn of man.  The earliest documentation of its use was found in China dating as early as 6000 B.C.  Since then there have been many “studies” all too often with varied results.

Up until recently, most of the so called “studies” and “tests” on Marijuana were done in the 70’s and 80’s by those working for the government.  A lot of propaganda, lies and even faked test results were reported as fact so people would believe the illusion that marijuana was evil and dangerous.  There were claims that it would alter your brain chemistry, make you a blithering idiot and cause irreparable harm!  Remember Reefer Madness?   When did you ever witness someone lose it and go berserk as a result of smoking a joint!

For far too long the line between fact and fiction in regards to marijuana have been blurred and misleading.  New studies by reputable people using today’s technology need to be done.  You have to ask why they aren’t being done.  For us, it seems they are afraid of the truth!  Here are a few facts and fictions we’ve found and what WE believe to be the truth!

Fact or Fiction:  Doctor’s do not agree on Marijuana's Medical Use – BOTH

In an older poll conducted by Medscape, a website directed towards health care providers, 76 % of physicians and 89 % of nurses said they thought marijuana should be available as a medicine.  This was back in 2003!!  It would be a safe bet that those numbers are even higher today.  According to Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a retired emeritus professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, author of "Marihuana Reconsidered" and coauthor of "Marijuana, the Forbidden Medicine", “Marijuana should be removed from the medical and criminal control systems. It should be legalized for adults for all uses.”  We concur!!

Fact or Fiction:  Marijuana is highly addictive – FICTION

Essentially all drugs or anything that gives you pleasure can be used in an addictive way by some people. However, for something to be identified as highly addictive there should be evidence that substantial numbers repeatedly fail in their attempts to discontinue the “habit” and they develop patterns that interfere with other life activities.

Previous surveys show that a large majority of people who have had experience with marijuana do NOT become regular users. Take one study done in 1994 by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services:  “In 1993, among Americans age 12 and over, about 34% had used marijuana sometime in their life, but only 9% had used it in the past year, 4.3% in the past month, and 2.8% in the past week.”

Another long term survey, by the same organization from 1975 to 1990, of young adults who had first been surveyed in high school, also found a high "discontinuation rate" for marijuana. While 77% had used the drug, 74% of those had not used in the past year and 84% had not used in the past month.

In our humble opinion, even people who use marijuana for several years or more are not necessarily "addicted" to it. Many regular users consume marijuana in a way that does not interfere with life in a negative way, and may in some cases enhance them.

Fact or Fiction:  Marijuana is a Gateway Drug – FICTION

According to the same study cited previously by the US Dept. Health and Human Services in 1993, over 75 percent of all Americans who use marijuana never used hard drugs.

Even more interesting and alarming, other studies have shown that most people who are addicted to hard drugs like cocaine, LSD or heroin, all started with alcohol. But because everyone can grow cannabis, there is no money to be made in marijuana, at this point, for the government, so they make it illegal, spread lies and propaganda to keep it illegal.

Do you see the bigger picture now? It’s all about the money! If they would legalize marijuana then a lot of people will trade in there liquor bottle for a bag of weed and liquor sales will go down and that will hurt Uncle Sam’s pocket a lot, since they make a lot of money on liquor sale taxes.

Fact or Fiction:  No one has ever died from an overdose of Marijuana – FACT

According to whichever government study you read, it would take a person consuming almost 1,500 POUNDS in 15 minutes to die from marijuana!  Really!!

And they did multiple studies on this?  When in America, every year, US Vital Statistics show approximately 20,000 people die directly from alcohol poisoning!   Alcohol related deaths account for approximately 80,000 lives lost per year in America and in fact, is the third leading cause of death, too!  BUT it’s legal? And promoted!

NO ONE has EVER died smoking marijuana!  Enough said!

Fact or Fiction:  Marijuana is more dangerous than tobacco – Undecided

We’ve all heard it.  A marijuana “joint” is “4 times, 6 times, 10 times”, worse than a cigarette!  So which is it?  Tar and carcinogens are the main reason why smoking tobacco and marijuana are considered bad for your health. No one can argue that fact BUT

As far as we are concerned the jury is still out on this one.  We believe far more in the good that marijuana can bring and encourage the healthiest forms of ingesting!  We also realize that sometimes ya just want to smoke one!

Fact or Fiction:  Marijuana causes brain damage – Fiction

More than 20 years ago, a study was done with monkeys in which they were given high doses of marijuana over a long period of time.  In postmortem examinations “structural changes in several regions of the brain” were reported.  Thus making the “obvious” connection to brain damage from marijuana; a fact!  It should be noted, however, that to “produce” these findings, massive amounts of THC were induced; up to 200 times more than the average psychoactive dosage in humans.  Later studies using even lesser amounts failed to re-create any “brain damage. ”

Fast forward to a new study done more recently in which monkeys were exposed though face-mask inhalation the equivalent of four to five “joints” per day for a year.  When postmortem test were preformed seven months later, no ‘brain damage’ was found.  Period!

Sad when animals are sacrificed for the “good of science. ”  To date no postmortem studies have been done on the brains of chronic marijuana users.  Maybe they should ask for volunteers?!

Fact or Fiction:  Marijuana cause aggressive behavior and encourages crime – Fiction

In the 1930’s, the American public were told that marijuana use would result in insanity, criminal behavior, aggression and violence.  Hence, the 1937 Marihauna Tax Act that resulted in the American perspective of “Reefer Madness”!!

Scientists today describe the effects of marijuana as “euphoric. ”  According to Webster’s Merriam Dictionary, euphoria is “a feeling of well-being or elation” and its Greek roots, euphoros, means healthy!!  Tell us something we didn’t already know!!

This list could go on and on we will add more to it from time to time.  Whenever we see lies being told or propaganda being spread that distorts what we believe to be the truth, we will share it with you.  If you would like to help add to this list, send us your suggestions.
